Thermal Oil Rotary Joints: Leak-Free Sealing for Ultra-High Temperatures

July 7, 2026

In thermal piping engineering, transferring high-temperature heat transfer fluids (HTF) or hot oil from a stationary supply line into rotating machinery requires highly reliable sealing components. Thermal oil rotary joints (also referred to thermal oil rotary unions) provide the essential, secure connection required to prevent media leakage under severe thermal expansion and dynamic operational stress.

As a heavy-duty design for high-heat piping, our advanced fluid control solutions are engineered to deliver unparalleled maintenance-free operational reliability, maintaining structural integrity where conventional sealing systems fail.

Technical Features and Engineering Advantages

Balanced Mechanical Seal Configuration: Standard compression packings or unbalanced seals suffer from excessive friction and accelerated wear when handling hot oil. Our thermal oil rotary unions utilize a balanced mechanical seal design. This configuration minimizes the hydraulic load on the seal faces, reduces running torque, and significantly extends the service life. The seal faces are formulated from premium silicon carbide (SiC), tungsten carbide, or antimony-impregnated graphite to withstand the poor lubricity and abrasive carbon particles found in degraded thermal oil.

Thermal Expansion Compensation Mechanism: Operating at extreme temperatures causes substantial dimensional changes within the piping assembly. Our rotary joints feature a built-in spherical sealing structure or heavy-duty internal springs that automatically compensate for thermal expansion, misalignment, and angular piping deflections. This prevents mechanical binding and guarantees a leak-free seal during rapid temperature fluctuations.

Heat-Isolated Bearing System: To avoid grease carbonization and subsequent bearing failure, our rotary unions are equipped with self-lubricating carbon graphite bearings or external ball bearings completely isolated from the primary hot oil channel. This heavy-duty engineering stabilizes the rotor under high rotational speeds, ensuring long-term operational reliability without the need for frequent manual lubrication.

Robust Structural Integrity: The pressure-containing housing is constructed from heavy-duty cast iron, carbon steel, or stainless steel to ensure maximum pressure retention under tough conditions. The rotor undergoes precision grinding and surface hardening treatments, such as QPQ or hard chrome plating, to minimize friction coefficients against the seal rings and eliminate premature wear.
