Application of ASTM A182 Gr. F60 in ASME B31 Codes

ASTM A182 Gr. F60 is a standard duplex stainless steel forging grade with nominal composition of 22Cr-5Ni-3Mo-N and UNS S32205. It is widely used for the manufacture of piping components for ASME B31.1 power piping and ASME B31.3 processing piping. Both ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 have endorsed ASTM A182 Gr. F60 as a listed material.

Temperature Limits & Allowable Stresses in ASME B31.3

According to ASME B31.3 processing piping, the maximum design temperature (upper temperature limit) and the minimum design temperature (lower temperature limit) without impacts for ASTM A182 F60 (S32205) are 600°F [315°C] and -60°F [-51°F], respectively.

*Basic allowable stresses in tension, S, for ASTM A182 Gr. F60 at various metal temperatures, for design calculation.
*Allowable stresses in shear shall be 0.80 times the basic allowable stress in tension.
*Allowable stresses in bearing shall be 1.60 times the basic allowable stress in tension.
*Allowable stresses in compression shall be no greater than the basic allowable stress in tension.
*The specified minimum tensile strength of ASTM A182 F60 at room temperature is 95 ksi; while the minimum yield strength of that at room temperature is 65 ksi.

Temperature Limits & Allowable Stresses in ASME B31.1

According to ASME B31.1 power piping, the maximum design temperature (upper temperature limit) for ASTM A182 Gr. F60 is also 600°F [315°C]. The minimum design temperature (lower temperature limit) for ASTM A182 F60 shall be determined by its T-Number Group in accordance with ASME B31T. The T-Number Group of ASTM A182 Gr. F60 is SS-20 and the low temperature service limit shall be -20°F [-29°C].
